Dummies

They are among us …

Robots, doppelgangers, homunculi’s, golems, Frankenstein’s monster, changelings … these are all manifestations of people’s subconscious preoccupation with imposters. Some are benign, others not so much.

This phenomenon is not new of course. Tales of creatures that are like us yet not like us go back to ancient times, and are part and parcel of mythology, folklore and legend. I’m always aware of this when I walk through any city, and realise I am surrounded by artificial people, in the shape of mannequins.

I always wonder what they are thinking. What they would do if given life. There is a strange grace about them. A sense of pathos, but also something surreal. They are so alien from us, yet modelled and clothed in a way which can be eerily human.

I’m not sure if this will turn into a real project, but I can never resist a good mannequin shot.

I like it! Especially the ones that evoke traditional portraiture, where the disjunction is most apparent. Beautiful colours as always.
